One of the most revisited themes of artists all around the world is the familiar vase filled with bouquets of flowers. But as I look at ‘Rugged Coast’, it occurs to me that, rather than put them in a vase, Sam presents an entire island as his bouquet. It makes for an interesting introspection, for, whereas a bouquet in a vase is a kind of man-made beauty, Sam’s art seems to assert that Nature’s true beauty requires no intervention, only that we open our eyes, and see. In these times that can often feel overwhelming, there’s really something rather reassuring about that.
