HOWE SOUND ART

The Howe Sound, bordered on the west by the ‘Sunshine Coast’, and on the east by what’s known colloquially as ‘the road to whistler’, has inspired countless BC artists. Many of the works of Canada’s illustrious ‘Group of Seven‘ painters, including Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, and Tom Thomson, produced works echoed by scenery one might find in the Howe Sound. Their bold new styles left an indelible mark on those that followed. They set the stage, and created a template, very much inspired by the majesty of the Canadian landscape. In the last century, artists like W.P. Weston and Don Flather created wonderful works based on Howe Sound vistas. Today, contemporary artists such as Glenn Payan, Michael O’Toole, Bott Nicholas, and Mark Grafe, also inspired by the region, have gifted us with remarkable examples of Howe Sound art.

THE HOWE SOUND

Mother Nature put an extra dose of magic in the mix when she created the Howe Sound. So it’s no wonder many BC artists, past and present, have created art inspired by the Howe Sound. This offshoot of the Georgia Strait begins at Horseshoe Bay, and travels north for some 25 miles to Squamish, BC. With its forest-covered mountains and ocean views, it includes numerous islands, including Bowen and Gambier Island, and has some of the world’s most spectacular scenery.  This spectacular span of BC coastline winds through stunning island, and mountain vistas that are nothing short of breath-taking.

THE BEAT GOES ON

Another Canadian artist, Sam Siegel, is one of BC’s new young painters who is really starting to make waves in the art community. His ‘Road to Whistler’ takes us through spectacular ‘Howe Sound’ scenery that has been a major inspiration for his art, too. Along with other paintings, such as ‘Howe Sound’, ‘Britannia Beach’, and ‘Stawamus Chief’, it is part of his ‘Whistler Series’ that has been especially popular with Vancouver art collectors.
