Sam Siegel paintings generally have a kind of ‘fairytale’ look about them. The juxtaposition of the real and unreal are, in fact, one of the most intriguing and appealing features of Sam Siegel’s paintings. They are, at once, comfortably familiar, while pleasingly abstract. This painting, entitled ‘Sunshine Coast’, is a perfect example of that. Its coastal island vista will be a familiar image to anyone who has driven along Vancouver’s fabled ‘Sea To Sky’ highway, or travelled by ferry amongst the many islands populating the Howe Sound waterway. And yet, his unique sense of color and playful geometry transport us to another dreamy, and delightful, world.
